I have never been one to like perfume or anything artificially smelly. They make me feel like I am suffocating and I quickly need fresh air to survive. I also can’t stand breathing stagnant air like when I’m under covers or intercepting someone else’s hot breath — even if it’s my husbands.
And don’t even get me started on being in small enclosed spaces with people who have a heavy dosage of perfume or cologne on, like airplanes and elevators. Or walking by the candle store at the mall.
Must. Have. Fresh. Air.
You get the picture — I’m not one for artificial smelly stuff and I have this weird thing about fresh air.
We all have our weird quirks, right?
So how did a weirdo who has issues with smells like me end up playing with different essential oil blends which ultimately led to creating a perfume blend?
It started because Andrew has had this wicked cold that does not want to go away.
Since I can’t get the kid to take anything that will actually help him, I started getting desperate — that’s usually when the “Aha!” moments come to me. I forgot I had a medicine cabinet full of KidSafe oils and realized there was probably a blend suitable for Andrew’s congestion.
Aha!
So I rushed to my cabinet, sorted through my KidSafe oils and found one called Sniffle Stopper. Since I don’t have a diffuser, I mixed a few drops of the oil with some almond oil and rubbed it on his chest. The only problem was that I had leftover oil and had to keep it in a glass dish in my bathroom. Even though it’s not a HUGE deal, I wondered if there was a better solution and there is!
Two-ish words: Roll-on bottle
I put about 20 drops of Sniffle Stopper in a roll-on bottle and filled the rest with fractionated coconut oil. Now, all I have to do is roll some on him and I can take it with me wherever we go. Isn’t that fantastic?
Then it got me thinking.
With the holiday quickly approaching, I had better start thinking of things I could give/make as gifts for my loved ones. A roll-on bottle filled with a non-artifically-smelly smell would be great! Everyone loves pretty smells that don’t make you feel like you’re suffocating AND have therapeutic benefits, right?
So, I grabbed some of my favorite scents and got to mixing.
I did a little researching and came across this post that talks about various notes (base, medium, top) and which scents make up the notes. Interestingly enough, creating perfumes is not as simple as putting a few smells together and magically creating the perfect scent. There is a lot of trial and error and I found this out my first try.
The first blend I created was a mixture of Sandalwood, Bergamot, and Geranium. After creating this blend, I realized that I do not prefer floral scents. For the next batch, I swapped out the Geranium for Frankincense and it was much, MUCH better. It’s a bit woodsy and sensual, with the tiniest whiff of a very soft citrus smell (which comes from Bergamot — my new favorite essential oil smell).
I also blended a really simple combo of Sandalwood and Bergamot. Out of all three blends I’ve tried, this one by far is my favorite. It’s uplifting and peaceful — the smell almost reminds of you the fresh smell after rain. I love Frankincense in the blend, but it can be a little musky for some women. By removing the Frankincense, I’ve found that the Sandalwood adds a little bit of depth and earthiness, while the Bergamot adds a fresh, uplifting, and slightly sweet finishing smell. LOVE! Find the recipe below.
If you want to blend some oils together to create a perfume, I suggest starting now (especially if you’ll be making them as gifts). This way, it gives you time to smell the scent every day to make sure you’ve hit all the right notes you prefer. You can find more info on creating perfume, here.
Really, the possibilities are endless.
There are so many ways you can create different DIY essential oil roll-on blends but honestly, sometimes simplicity is the best choice.
If you have a favorite scent or love a particular therapeutic quality in an oil, you can simply put 20-40 drops in a roll-on bottle, fill it with fractionated coconut oil and call it a day. If you have a favorite blend, you can pre-dillute it yourself in a roll-on bottle and take it with you whever you want.
I love the roll-on bottle idea because it enables you to make the most use of your essential oil bottle (singular or blend). Since you almost always have to dilute your essential oil when applying it topically, the roll-on bottle really makes doing this super convenient.
Use the oil and/or blend in your diffuser, in a homemade beauty product, or put some in a roll-on bottle for sheer convenience. If you don’t feel like experimenting with blending your own scents, Plant Therapy has pre-blended essential oil roll-on bottles that you can buy.
With just one bottle of your favorite blend, a few roll-on bottles, and some fractionated coconut oil, you could make quite a few essential oil blends to give as gifts this year for the holidays or to treat yourself to some non-artificial smells.
*Please note: after a commenter experienced a rash because of the high concentration of oils, I have cut back the quantities per essential oil by half. Please start at that point and work up if needed.
